From Quebec Nordiques to NHL Dominance
The story began in 1972 as the Quebec Nordiques. After winning the Avco World Trophy (WHA) in 1977, they joined the NHL in 1979. Despite legends like the Šťastný brothers and Joe Sakic, financial struggles led to a move to Denver in May 1995.
In their 1995-96 debut season, the Avalanche acquired Patrick Roy in a historic trade. This "missing piece" led them to sweep the Florida Panthers, making Colorado the first relocated team to win the Stanley Cup in its first season.
The most feared team in the league. They won an NHL-record 9 consecutive division titles. The era was defined by the legendary rivalry with Detroit and the emotional 2001 Cup win, where Joe Sakic handed the trophy to Ray Bourque.
A new dynasty rose through elite drafting. Led by the speed of Nathan MacKinnon and the brilliance of Cale Makar, the Avs became "Dynasty Slayers" in 2022 by defeating Tampa Bay to secure their third Stanley Cup.
The Mile High Fortress | Elevation: 1,609m
Sitting at 5,280 feet (1,609m), the "thin air" causes lungs to burn for visiting teams. The Avalanche exploit this with a high-tempo game that exhausts opponents who aren't acclimated to the elevation.
The arena is famous for its 18,000 fans singing "All the Small Things" by Blink-182 a cappella during the 3rd period—a tradition that symbolizes the bond between the city and the team.
